Interesting article on Gabel and the topic of those who withdraw from the University. It was a little sobering to note that Gabel felt that he did not receive the necessary academic counsel. This was one of the concerns of Marvin Bressler and other academic "advisors" to athletic teams. Freshman year can be a real trial to a student athlete whose schedule is weighted with many hours of team practice -- especially if that athlete does not have the advantage of exceptional high school preparation.

I hope that Dr. Bressler's role has become institutionalized at Princeton and that basketball players still have a counselor to turn to on those occasions when school seems overwhelming. Sometimes it takes a wise head to identify a situation before it gets out of hand.
