The home opener for Denver (2-1) went well. The Pioneers built a 21 point lead and pushed aside a couple late Wyoming runs on the way to a 76-65 victory. I caught the last seven+ minutes of this game on TV late last night and while the Pioneers had too many turnovers while trying to run out the clock, Joe Scott's new team did not look as devoid of talent as I expected them to be. The Associated Press reporter was similarly surprised.

Around the Ivy League: Columbia (1-2) gave a game effort at Ohio State before falling 68-54.

I attended the DU/Wyoming game last night at Magness Arena. There must be something about the Rocky Mountain air that suits Joe Scott. His team looked great last night. They handily defeated a pretty talented (and large) Wyoming team last night. I was very surprised at what I saw. I expected Scott to have his young and unheralded squad play a slow, deliberate game. At times they did but at other times they were opportunistic, running the court, playing up tempo transition basketball. There were a couple of slam dunks and lots of shots taken early in the 35-second shot clock. DU even out rebounded Wyoming. Not exactly Princeton-styled basketball. On the other hand, DU did at times run the Princeton offense, and the Pioneers were particularly adept at generating and making open shots from beyond the arc. Overall, this was an extremely impressive debut for Scott at DU. So far it looks like he's going to be successful in this stint. Parting shot: the game program, distributed without charge to the audience, featured a large cover photo of Scott crouching during a game with his intensely clenched. (A close inspection revealed this to be a photo from Scott's Air Force days). DU definitely has made Joe Scott the face of its basketball program. So far, their faith in him looks well placed.
