Will Venable became just the second player in San Diego Padres history and the first in 39 years to hit a triple in his first career at-bat.

Starting in center field and batting sixth in the lineup, Venable was 1-4 at the plate in his major league debut, the first Princeton alum to make the pros as a position player since John Easton in 1959.

The Marin Independent Journal tracked down Venable at the Portland airport on his way to San Diego. Venable also spoke to mlb.com before yesterday's action.

From the "I couldn't make this up if I tried" file: The Knicks traded the rights to 1999 bust Frederic Weis for Georgetown grad Patrick Ewing Jr.
