Steven Cook commits to Princeton.

6'4" junior guard/forward Steven Cook from New Trier High School in Winnetka, IL has verbally committed to Princeton according to his coach Scott Fricke.

Cook, who only recently began playing varsity basketball, will join the Tigers in the fall of 2013 pending admission.

I expect to talk with Coach Fricke shortly for a full profile of this new Tiger recruit.

Cook is a product of Full Package Athletics, a player development program based in Northbrook that produced a pair of current Princeton players - Mack Darrow and Brian Fabrizius.

For those of us (well, me) who do not understand the ramifications of a "verbal committment," can you describe them?

Well, they're all "verbal commitments" until a likely letter or actual admission, as there are no Letters of Intent in the Ivy League.

How common is it to a Junior to verbally commit ?

Exceptionally rare to the point that I wanted to confirm with his high school coach before I posted anything. There was a case a couple years back where a player in Texas said he was going to Princeton and this was a surprise to the coaching staff...

If he's in quality academic standing (and his profile on the Full Package site is glowing) and he has his mind made up, he's more than welcome to do so!

A couple articles about this decision in today's news.

Now, to drive to Ithaca.

Jon: Be careful...it's snowing along Route 81! I am in Scranton which means there's a blizzard in Ithaca...

I made it to Ithaca. There's snow coming down, but it is not ridiculous like it has been in other years.

Wow, that kid is skinny. Hope he fills out over the next 18 months.
