Padres sign Venable, sell Clark to Japan

The Padres have reached agreement with the first of their eight arbitration-eligible players.

Outfielder Will Venable signed a one-year contract Wednesday worth $2.675 million in 2013.

The 30-year-old Venable hit .264 with nine home runs and 45 RBI in 417 at-bats last season while spending most of the season platooning with Chris Denorfia in right field. He started 80 games in right, 16 in center and seven in left.

The left-handed hitting Venable hit .270 against right-handed pitching and his .353 average with runners in scoring position was the sixth-best mark in the National League.

The signing of Venable leaves seven Padres who have filed for arbitration – third baseman Chase Headley, shortstop Everth Cabrera, catcher John Baker, starting pitchers Clayton Richard and Edinson Volquez and relief pitchers Luke Gregerson and Joe Thatcher.

In other news, the Padres have sold the contract of minor league first baseman Matt Clark to the Chunichi Dragons in Japan. Clark, 26, hit .290 with 22 homers and 77 RBI for Triple-A Tucson last season.
