    EVANSTON, Ill. -- Turnovers and missed free throws proved costly for the Northwestern men's basketball team Saturday afternoon as the Wildcats dropped a 50-44 decision to UIC.

    NU connected on just 10 of its 20 attempts from the free throw line in the contest, including the front end of one-and-one situations on multiple occasions, and committed 16 turnovers.

    Drew Crawford paced Northwestern with 18 points, while Josh Crittle had 13 to lead the Flames.

    It was a back-and-forth contest the entire way and the Wildcats trailed 40-37 following Gary Talton's basket with 5:25 to go. However, Crawford hit a tough hanging jumper in the lane and then followed it up with a 3-pointer, giving NU a 42-40 advantage with 4:18 left.

    The teams exchanged turnovers before Talton scored on a layup to tie it. Two missed free throws by Northwestern preceded Marc Brown scoring off a feed from Crittle to put the guests in front.

    Reggie Hearn tied it with two from the line with 2:09 remaining and the Wildcats forced a turnover but couldn't covert on a pair of shots at the rim that would have given them the lead with under 90 seconds remaining.

    An offensive rebound led to a put-back by Crittle that gave UIC the lead for good with 53 seconds to go. Northwestern had a chance to tie it, but another miss at the rim forced the 'Cats to foul and Talton made two from the line to make it 48-44.

    Northwestern was fouled on the other end, but missed on the front end of the bonus and Hayden Humes made two final free throws to seal the game for the Flames.

    The Wildcats limited UIC to 30.9 percent shooting (17-55) in the contest, but made just 34.9 percent (15-43) themselves.

    Northwestern returns to action at 8 p.m. Tuesday as it travels to Waco, Texas, to take on Baylor.
