Trevians win in rout

Updated: December 2, 2012 3:49PM

NILES — The New Trier boys basketball team was coming off a dispiriting and disappointing loss against Warren. Steven Cook did something dramatic to get his team going Sunday.

The Princeton-bound 6-foot-4 senior bookended the first half with spectacular slam dunks that symbolized the Trevians’ dominance over Julian as New Trier played its sharpest game of the year and won 62-32 in the Notre Dame Shootout.

Cook controlled the opening tip to senior center Aaron Angel, took a bounce pass and finished with a two-hand tomahawk dunk. He finished the Trevians’ superb first half with a vicious alley-oop dunk from senior point guard Reid Berman that pushed the Trevians (5-2) to a commanding 35-16 lead at the break.

“Those are two plays we have that we like to run,” Cook said. “Last night against Warren, we came out sluggish and played with little energy at the start of the game. The dunks are worth, I realize only two points, but they gave the whole team energy and that’s what we needed.”

Playing just two-and-a-half quarters, Cook scored 12 points and added four rebounds and three steals for the Trevians. Senior forward Stas Banas led the Trevians with 13 points. With junior Jordan Thomas (six points, five assists) running the offense, New Trier showcased excellent passing and ball movement.

“We’re a team that plays well together, and we moved and passed the ball very well,” Thomas said.

New Trier held a 27-point advantage on 3-pointers, making nine and shutting the Jaguars (0-2) down from behind the arc.

New Trier turned the game into a rout with a 15-4 burst to start the second half; Banas drilled two 3-pointers during the run.

New Trier coach Scott Fricke played all 15 players on his roster and 10 different Trevians scored.

Berman finished with seven points, four assists and three steals. Angel and reserve junior guard Ricky Samuelson added six points apiece.

Demetrius Cooper scored 11 points and Deante Cisero added nine points for the Jaguars.
