    EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern's four-game ACC/Big Ten Challenge winning streak was stopped Tuesday night at Welsh-Ryan Arena when Maryland pulled away in the second half for a 77-57 win over the Wildcats.

    The loss was NU's first in the annual event since falling to Virginia in 2007. Since then, the Wildcats had racked up wins over Florida State, NC State and Georgia Tech (twice). The defeat also halted a 21-game Northwestern winning streak during the month of November that had been the second-longest in the nation.

    Reggie Hearn led Northwestern (6-1) with 19 points -- the third-best scoring output of his career -- while Dave Sobolewski (14) and Drew Crawford (10) also joined Hearn in double figures. NU struggled overall from the field, hitting on just 34 percent of its attempts (18-of-53) while Maryland shot a red-hot 52.7 percent (29-of 55). Maryland also held a 47-19 advantage on the boards.

    Dez Wells led the Terrapins (5-1) with 23 points on 9-of-11 shooting.

    Maryland went on its first big run of the game midway through the first half, turning an 18-17 deficit into a 26-18 lead with a 9-0 run. The Wildcats immediately responded with a 7-0 run of their own, started by a Crawford 3-pointer and capped by an Alex Marcotullio backdoor layup off a pretty Alex Olah feed.

    The Terrapins went into the locker room with a 28-26 edge, which the Wildcats erased on their first possession of the second half via a Crawford layup. Maryland then exploded on a 13-1 run that resulted in a 47-34 lead for the ACC squad -- an edge which Northwestern was unable to cut below double digits the rest of the way.
