No doubts about Sobolewski's decision

Northwestern dipped into Illinois' talented Class of 2011 Sunday, receiving a commitment from Benet senior guard David Sobolewski.

Sobolewski knew Northwestern was where he wanted to go after making two previous visits to the Evanston campus, but he was waiting for a scholarship offer. Wildcats coach Bill Carmody made that offer Sunday after watching him play on Friday, and Sobolewski immediately committed.

"The second time I had visited, coach [Tavaras] Hardy kind of told me that it was Northwestern policy that coach Carmody likes to see players before he offers them," said Sobolewski, a 6-foot-1 combo guard. "I had a good tournament in Highland, Ind., this weekend, and coach Carmody was there. It was a no-brainer for me when they offered. It feels even better because it's where I wanted to go. I didn't make a decision to make a decision."

Hardy was the lead recruiter on Sobolewski and was in Highland, Ind., on Saturday and Sunday to watch Sobolewski play with the Illinois Wolves in the Division I Elite Invitational.

Sobolewski, an ESPNChicago.com All-Area selection, averaged 16 points, six rebounds and four rebounds last season for Benet. He especially excelled late in the season and led to Benet to a Class 4A super-sectional.

Sobolewski believes his versatile game will fit well with Northwestern's system.

"People think the Princeton offense is so complicated," Sobolewski said. "What they do is leave the decisions up to the players on the floor, and they let those players make the decisions when the time comes. They want smart players. I'm excited for the opportunity I have.

"Coach Carmody made it clear to me he would never tell a player, 'You're the point guard. You're the shooting guard.' He just told me that he has five players out there. He wants his players to do a little bit of everything."

Sobolewski also considered Bradley, Bucknell, Harvard, Northern Iowa, Princeton and William and Mary. Sobolewski is Northwestern's first 2011 recruit. The Wildcats have five available scholarships for the class.
