Mejia pulled for overthrowing

Jenrry Mejia was slated for a longer appearance when he faced extended spring training batters Friday in Port St. Lucie, Fla. But Mets staff pulled Mejia just into the right-hander's second inning of work because they sensed he was too excited and overthrowing and "coming out of his delivery," pitching coach Dan Warthen said.

With Mejia in the final stages of returning from May 16, 2011 Tommy John surgery, Mets officials are being vigilant in ensuring Mejia does not alter his delivery or try to overexert himself.

Also in St. Lucie:

• D.J. Carrasco could begin a rehab assignment for his twisted right ankle with Class A St. Lucie within days.

• Chris Young, who had surgery to repair a torn anterior capsule in his right shoulder the same day as Mejia's Tommy John procedure, could be in a Florida State League game within two weeks, Warthen said. The pitching coach said Young "feels great" after facing batters, but the Mets are proceeding slowly given the gravity of his surgery.

• Young is expected to eventually work his way up the Mets minor league system, from St. Lucie to Triple-A Buffalo. He has contract outs on June 1 and July 1 if he is not promoted to the majors by those dates.

• Pedro Beato, who like Carrasco opened the season on the DL, is progressing and "building up arm strength," according to Warthen.
