UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Senior Darien Brothers tied the school record for three-pointers (8) and scored a career-high 39 points as Richmond defeated Charlotte 81-61 Saturday in front of 8,321 fans in the Robins Center.
Brothers connected on 8-of-11 three-pointers, tying the school single-game record he now shares with Jonathan Baker (March 3, 1996), Ken Atkinson (Feb, 14, 1990) and Chris Fleming (Dec. 1, 1990). Brothers had made seven three-pointers against Old Dominion last season and Kendall Anthony made seven three-pointers against Air Force on Jan. 2.
The Richmond native scored the Spiders' first 17 points and finished the game with a career-high 39 points, making 10-of-14 field goals and 11-of-12 free throws. He also finished with eight rebounds, one shy of his career high.
The Spiders jumped out to an early lead, held a 38-28 advantage at the half and led by as many as 24 in the second half as they took down a 49er team that entered the game 15-2 and 3-0 in the Atlantic 10. Richmond has won nine of the last 11 meetings with the 49ers.
Freshman Deion Taylor made his first collegiate start a few weeks before his 18th birthday and scored a career-high 13 point, making 5-of-9 field goals, 2-of-4 three-pointers and two thunderous dunks.
Anthony returned to his role coming off the bench and scored 12 points, making 4-of-9 field goals and his 100th career three-pointer.
Senior Greg Robbins scored seven points, four rebounds and four assists.
Richmond, which improved to 10-1 at home this season, hosts city-rival VCU on Thursday at 7 p.m. in a nationally televised game on the CBS Sports Network.
NOTES: The Spiders won 10 games in the Robins Center for the 20th time in 41 seasons in the arena, including sixth time in eight years under Chris Mooney...Richmond is 50-9 in the last 59 home games...Darien Brothers moved into 31st on Richmond's all-time scoring list, passsing Rodney Rice and Picot Frazier.
