The University of Denver men's and women's basketball teams and many of the school's other sports will depart from the troubled Western Athletic Conference after one season next summer to join the Summit League, a school source confirmed Monday. A news conference is scheduled for Tuesday, when the Pioneers will officially announce they will join the nine-school league based in Elmhurst, Ill., that features North Dakota State, South Dakota State, South Dakota, Fort Wayne (Ind.), Western Illinois, University of Missouri-Kansas City, Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis, Oakland (Rochester, Mich.) and Nebraska Omaha. South Dakota State obtained the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament in men's basketball last season. Oral Roberts won the regular-season crown but is no longer a member of the Summit League. The Pioneers left the Sun Belt Conference after last season to join the WAC, which has tried to absorb the departures of most of its flagship schools but still remains shaky. WAC commissioner Jeff Hurd confirmed that his office has received notification from DU that it is leaving. "We're still facing challenges," Hurd said of the WAC's battle for survival. The WAC previously said it would be a non-football loop after this year. Hurd indicated the conference would be adding Grand Canyon University of Phoenix, although it is transitioning to Division I. DU's hockey, gymnastics (independent) and men's and women's lacrosse teams will not have direct affiliation with the Summit League, which does not offer those sports.
