UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Darien Brothers scored 20 points to lead five Spiders in double-figures as Richmond defeated William & Mary 86-78 in double-overtime Wednesday at the Robins Center.
Brothers made his first seven field goals, but his biggest of the night came in the first overtime with the Spiders trailing by five with just over two minutes to play. Junior Cedrick Lindsay drove the lane and kicked to Brothers for a three-pointer that cut the gap to 69-67.
The Spiders were still trailing 71-68 with under a minute left in the first OT, when sophomore Kendall Anthony follwed with an old-fashioned three-point play to tie the game and force a second extra session, during which Richmond never trailed.
Junior Derrick Williams posted his second double-double of the season with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Anthony finished with 15 points, making 9-of-9 free throws, and senior Greg Robbins had 14 points on 6-of-10 shooting.
Lindsay, who returned to the court after missing the last two games with a concussion, made a clutch game-tying three-pointer with 31 seconds remaining in regulation to force overtime. He also had an And 1 layup in the second overtime that started to give the Spiders separation. Lindsay tied his season high for points (12), season-high for assists (6) and career-high for rebounds (6).
Freshman Terry Allen had five points, three rebounds and blocked three shots as Richmond shot 50 percent from the field (28-of-56) and 44 percent from three (11-of-25).
Richmond led for most of the second half, keeping the lead at between four and seven points from the 13 minute mark until a Marcus Thornton jumper with 4:20 left cut the gap to two. A three-pointer by Williams put the lead back to five (61-6) with 3:45 left, but a layup by Tim Rusthoven (20 points) and three-pointer by Brandon Brit (14 points) tied the game.
Three free throws put the Tribe (3-3) up 64-64 before Lindsay sank the clutch three-pointer to begin the first of the Spiders last minute comebacks on the night.
The Spiders host Wake Forest on Saturday at 6 p.m. in the Bank of American Challenge.
NOTES: The Spiders played their first overtime game since a Dec. 20, 2011 win over Old Dominion and was the first double-OT game since a loss at Iona on Nov. 18, 2010...Richmond improved to 66-42 in overtime games, including 8-9 in double-overtime games...Terry Allen made his first career three-pointer...the Spiders shot 90.5 from the foul line (19-of-21)...the game started a strech where the Spiders play four of seven against CAA teams...Richmond improved to 101-97 all-time against the Tribe.
