Looking Ahead To Princeton

After a comfortable win against Wofford this week to open the CBI Tournament, things will probably tighten up a bit in the next game when Pitt takes on Princeton.

With a record of 19-11 heading into the postseason, the Tigers had a respectable season. But it's not just the record that should scare you if you're a Pitt fan.

Princeton lost several close games. Seven of their 11 losses were by no more than six points and if Princeton found a way to win even three of those contests (depending on who they would have beaten), they could have even had a look at the NCAAs.

The Tigers also have fared well on the road this year. They won nine games as the away team and beat Florida State and Rutgers on the road. Add in a narrow two-point road loss and home wins against ranked Harvard, 20-win Penn, and 19-win Yale, and there's definitely some cause for concern.

And if you want another reason to panic (well, panic as much as you can for a game in the CBI, anyway), the Tigers' best player is on the interior - 6'7" forward Ian Hummer, who leads the team in scoring and rebounding. Pitt has had trouble guarding interior players much of the season and they'll probably need to throw some double teams at him on occasion to try to keep him off balance. Keeping him out of the paint likely won't be enough, either. He's not a great three-point shooter, but has hit 19 of them this season, so he's at least capable.

The good news for Pitt is that they'll again be at home after forking over some money to host the contest. That hardly will guarantee a victory, but it should help. One thing to keep an eye on should Pitt win is the 20-win mark. If the Panthers can defeat Princeton, that would give them 19 wins, leaving them one shy of 20 for the 11th consecutive year.
