Despite a need at the major league level with Mike Pelfrey lost to season-ending Tommy John surgery, team officials do not want to hurry Young back from May 16, 2011 surgery to repair a torn anterior capsule in his right shoulder.

Young's fastball sat at 85 mph in the simulated game, which can use getting a shade higher before facing minor league batters in a formal game. Still, Young's fastball averaged only 84.7 mph in his four starts last season with the Mets before landing on the disabled list and then undergoing shoulder surgery. He had that identical velocity with the San Diego Padres the previous season. So Young can pitch at that velocity if need be.

Team officials, who are averse to considering Matt Harvey, acknowledge there is no real alternative to Chris Schwinden in Pelfrey's spot until Young is ready, which is estimated for late May.

• After throwing on back-to-back days for Class A St. Lucie in one-inning appearances that were described as "pretty dominant," D.J. Carrasco is expected to continue his rehab assignment at a higher level -- either Double-A Binghamton or Triple-A Buffalo. Carrasco opened the season on the disabled list after twisting his right ankle. Overall, Carrasco has allowed one hit and one walk in six scoreless innings with St. Lucie spanning four appearances.
