"A Fond Farewell To Kit."

So read the front page headline from the March 13, 1991 Town Topics. Senior center Kit Mueller is hoisted after fans stormed the floor following his final game at Jadwin Gym - a 76-48 rout over Loyola Marymount on Selection Sunday.

The regular season finale for both teams was played in front of possibly the largest crowd in the 22 year history of the building, an announced attendance of 7,735.

Mueller's stat line for his last home game? 21 points on 8-8 shooting, nine assists and six rebounds.

If I remember the game correctly (I should say, as I want to remember the game) we controlled the opening tap, scored on a backdoor play, stole the subsequent inbound pass, followed by a slamdunk. The crowed roared. Loyola never recovered. Regarding the attendance: Never before, nor since, has the PA announcer had to say, 'Please clear the stairs.'

Larry, I'll have to set up the VCR and check my tape to see if you're right!

That would be great. When asked about some of the big games I've seen at the gym I have been telling that version for years. Don't burst my bubble too harshly. That was a nationally televised CBS game. Loyola didn't have a great year but it was a big time program at the time.

Not only was it a nationally televised CBS game, but I believe some parts of the USA got LMU/Princeton, others got the ACC championship game.

How times have changed.

The game was the CBS "B game." Jefferson Pilot (or maybe Raycom) owned the regional TV rights to the ACC tournament. So CBS needed another game to show in the Southeast, where their ACC coverage was blacked out.
