Sunday News:

Is Will Venable too slow to play center field in the pros or is he like "a young Jim Edmonds?" Padres' vice president of scouting and development Grady Fuson thinks the answer is the latter. Venable hit his 12th home run of the season in Portland's 4-1 loss to Albuquerque.

Chris Young tells The Temecula Valley News about how his rehab stint with the Lake Elsinore Storm helped prepare him for his return to the major leagues.

Team USA defeated the Dave Blatt-coached Russian national team 89-68 in a pre-Olympics friendly. Russia was able to keep the game close using a technique Blatt picked up from Pete Carril. Blatt just signed a deal to coach Russia through 2012.

David Blatt: Saw about 20 minutes of the Russia-USA game on ESPN2 tape delay last night. A couple of very pretty backdoors. The announcers were effusive in their praise of Blatt and one wonders how long before he gets a shot in the NBA.

Venable: The Padres are 14-1/2 games out in the West and 19 out in the Wild Card. Brian Giles is hitting .297 but with almost no power. And he's 37 years old. The money they are spending on Giles is a sunk cost that they pay whether he plays or not. Why on earth isn't DePodesta letting Venable get exposure to major league pitching this month?
