As we hit the All-Star break, San Diego's Will Venable is slumping, hitting .091 in his last 10 games and down to .248 for the season. Venable has six home runs, 16 doubles and 21 RBIs as baseball pauses midway through the campaign.
Since returning from injury in June, Chris Young has started six games for the Mets. His 2-2 record disguises a 3.41 ERA. Young has pitched at least five innings in each of his starts.
After throwing six shutout innings against Philadelphia the last time out, Young was touched up for three runs in the seventh as the Phillies rallied past New York. Batters are hitting far better versus Young the third time through the lineup.
Pete Carril is part of the first class that will be inducted into the Reading High Athletic Hall of Fame.
Those in the DC area can watch Ian Hummer play at the Kenner League for Hoop Magic.
A superb two week summer vacation ends for Team Solomon tomorrow and we'll return to a regular posting routine on the site come Monday but here's one more tidbit:
A 2012-13 schedule that is expected to include many return matches from last year's slate will definitely include a trip to Lafayette's Kirby Sports Center on November 24th.
Several current and former Princeton players will suit up at the DelCo Pro-Am. Games kick off this Sunday.
Like the Tigers, Richmond also will be heading overseas in August.
He never played in college due to injury, but being hobbled actually set in motion the start of a relationship for Brian Elbogen, who got married last weekend. Aw.
Did you hear a former Harvard center is using the NCAA's graduate school eligibility option to play a final season at Boston College?
Unlike his last start versus the Yankees, where one pitch ruined his night, Chris Young (2-1) did not suffer a similar slip in the seventh inning against the Dodgers. Young allowed two earned runs on six hits while striking out six as the Mets defeated LA on the road 3-2.
Names like Georgetown's Hollis Thompson and Henry Sims (frozen by the top of Jay Bilas' Best Player Available list for most of the second round), Northwestern's John Shurna and Fairfield's Rakim Sanders were not called during last night's NBA Draft, but Oregon State's Jared Cunningham rose to 24th and was selected by Cleveland before being traded to Dallas.
Georgetown now knows their 18 Big East opponents for 2012-13. The Hoyas will travel to this area for games at Rutgers, St. John's and Villanova.
An interview with John McPhee makes for excellent reading.
Will Venable was one of two Padres to attend the Salute to the Negro Leagues luncheon in San Diego.
During my travels Venable hit his sixth home run of the season (video), a shot originally ruled a triple on the field.
The NCAA has released their annual Academic Progress Rate report and Princeton faired quite well across all sports, including a perfect "1000" multi-year rate for men's basketball. You can search by school, sport and conference here.
Here’s the latest collection of videos from various corners of the Princeton basketball family. Above, Craig Robinson is interviewed before Oregon State's graduation.
A diverse eight additional videos follow after the jump.
Judson Wallace knocked down a championship-sealing pair of free throws with a just over a second remaining as FC Barcelona defeated Real Madrid 73-69 in the deciding game of the ACB championship series.
Chris Young (1-1) likely deserved a better fate on Father's Day, taking a loss despite throwing seven innings versus the Reds during which he only allowed two earned runs. Young also drove in his team's first tally with a bases loaded walk (video). The Mets fell to Cincinnati 3-1.
Siena won the Lega A championship series in five games, perhaps ending the career of Mason Rocca with EA7 Emporio Armani Milano
He says he won't make a decision until March of next year, but a big man from the Los Angeles area mentions Princeton as one of five like-minded schools showing interest in him.
Another Georgian has a comparatively shorter (but still lengthy) school list that includes Princeton.
Georgetown will open its season on November 9th against Florida on an aircraft carrier near Jacksonville.
A formidable 2012-13 schedule for Richmond is nearly complete.
Northwestern's Bill Carmody is one of the coaches quoted in a piece about a recent rule change that allows unlimited texting between recruits and those seeking their services.
A 7'1" Sudanese center will (pending NCAA approval) apparently suit up for Carmody's squad this season, adding much-needed interior size.
Craig Robinson's sister was the graduation speaker at Oregon State yesterday.
Kevin "Moon" Mullin was a special guest at last week's Courier-Post/Kiwanis Scholar-Athlete Awards Banquet.
Will Venable is improving in matchups versus lefties.
Did you hear the Patriot League is adding Boston University as its ninth member?
Judson Wallace scored 16 points off the bench and grabbed six rebounds as FC Barcelona forced a decisive game five in the ACB championship series versus rival Real Madrid.
Princeton is but one of a slew of schools on the trail of a forward taking a PG year at a popular pre-Ivy destination.
Something Cappy Cappon once said to him has always stayed with Frank Deford.
Oregon State picked up a commitment from a 7'1" big man.
Yale unveiled a tentative 2012-13 basketball schedule which means you can pencil in dates for four of Princeton's conference games this season. Also of note, a significant home "get" for the Bulldogs.
C. Young (1-0) 5.2 IP 9 H 2 ER 2 BB 4 K 3.38 ERA. 106 pitches, 72 strikes.
Chris Young picked up his first major league victory in over a year as the Mets rallied for an 11-2 win at Tampa. Young teetered in the first inning but recovered nicely, allowing his team to stay in the game. It was Young's 50th career W.
Young's former teammate Will Venable, seen here (video) making a terrific diving catch, still trails his father in one key area.
During the preseason and first weekend of the 2011-12 season, Mercer County Community College head coach Howie Levy allowed a group of student filmmakers led by director Zohair Zaidi full access inside practices and the team locker room.
The result is a well-made and fairly unflinching "Hard Knocks"-style look at the Vikings from the often quite different perspectives of the coaching staff and the players.
This video is fully worth 20 minutes of your time, though I should warn you it probably would be rated PG-13 for language.
princetonbasketball.com was founded on April 28th, 1998 in an attempt to provide fans of the Princeton Tigers and Ivy League basketball with the best on-line source for up-to-date news and information. We have since expanded to launch a companion site, Georgetown Basketball News.
As these sites have continued to grow we have increased our coverage to include additional teams with Princeton connections - the Richmond Spiders, Denver Pioneers, Oregon State Beavers, Fairfield Stags and Mercer County Community College Vikings - plus former Tigers playing professional baseball and basketball all over the world. This site is not directly affiliated with the Friends of Princeton Basketball, Princeton University or the Princeton athletic department.
