Today is the fourth day of Princeton's most recent coaching search. How long can you expect the wait to last before the next head Tiger is announced. Well, if history is any indication...
The Princeton Packet talked to a pair of Tiger recruits about Coach Johnson's departure. Current players have been asked to not comment on the situation. The paper also attempts to work through why Johnson left.
In the wake of Coach Johnson's departure to Fairfield, Tiger recruit Clay Wilson has announced he is decommiting from Princeton and will possibly not head to New Jersey this fall.
This change of plans leaves the Tigers' 2011 recruiting class at three members. With acceptance letters already mailed, it may be too late to replace Wilson.
Fairfield introduced Sydney Johnson as the program's new head coach yesterday. You can watch the full presentation here (video) and read quotes from Johnson's subsequent conversation with the media here.
Former Princeton player Matt Henshon nails many key issues in Johnson's departure from a variety of angles.
Current Fairfield Director of Basketball Operations Tyson Wheeler will serve as an assistant coach on Johnson's staff. There is no word on who Johnson's other assistants will be.
In the eyes of Andy Katz it all came down to money. While I personally don't think this was the only factor, Katz makes a few sound points.
Yale's James Jones and several returning Fairfield players share their impressions of Coach Johnson.
Chris Young joined ESPN 1050 after his first win for the Mets.
On the excellent new site Big Apple Buckets, factors I had not initially considered are added - including the Stags' and the Tigers' basketball budgets as well as Princeton's basketball budget compared to other Ivy programs.
You can stream Johnson's introductory press conference here at 11:00 am ET.
I know Derek's Dreams is a cause important to many in the Princeton basketball community. Their second annual fundraising dinner is tonight in Belleville.
When a new branch of the Princeton basketball coaching tree grows, it usually results in great celebration around these parts. Tonight however the feeling from this most recent bough is bittersweet.
After four seasons coaching the Tigers, Sydney Johnson is leaving his alma mater for Fairfield.
Curious what coaches in the 2011 NCAA Tournament earn? The USA Today has updated their database.
I was asked back on WNYC's national morning program The Takeaway earlier today, talking about "One Shining Moment" as part of a piece titled "When Bad Music Happens to Good Sports." You can listen to my appearance here or stream the audio above.
My latest (and longest) Princeton Alumni Weekly article covering Princeton's final four games of the season is now available. Past pieces for PAW can be found here. Enjoy! - JS
Men's basketball drops a heartbreaker to Kentucky By Jon Solomon
When the Princeton men's basketball season ended, one basket shy of all the Tigers had worked for, Sydney Johnson '97 — who profoundly despised losing as both a player and a coach — did something unexpected: He allowed his team to say goodbye.
Before heading back into the depths of the St. Pete Times Forum in Tampa after a 59–57 NCAA Tournament defeat against Kentucky March 17, Johnson motioned his players not to the locker room but toward the Tiger faithful sitting across from his team's bench.
princetonbasketball.com was founded on April 28th, 1998 in an attempt to provide fans of the Princeton Tigers and Ivy League basketball with the best on-line source for up-to-date news and information. We have since expanded to launch a companion site, Georgetown Basketball News.
As these sites have continued to grow we have increased our coverage to include additional teams with Princeton connections - the Richmond Spiders, Denver Pioneers, Oregon State Beavers, Fairfield Stags and Mercer County Community College Vikings - plus former Tigers playing professional baseball and basketball all over the world. This site is not directly affiliated with the Friends of Princeton Basketball, Princeton University or the Princeton athletic department.
