Friday News:

Practices officially get underway for Division I schools around the country today.

Northwestern and Denver will open their doors to reporters tonight while Princeton will hold a pep rally for students this evening. The most public kickoff is at Georgetown, where a portion of their "March Madness" festivities will be covered by ESPNU - but as Hoyas coach John Thompson III tells the Washington Times, he won't be dancing this year.

ESPN is offering the Georgetown team preview from Blue Ribbon for free.

The AP has a piece built about Hoya center Greg Monroe, who is expected to anchor his no-senior squad.

Mid-Major Madness lists Princeton as #156 in their Ultimate Rankings Countdown.

New Recruit - Ben Hazel.

As the month of September came to a close, Princeton may already have completed their 2010 recruiting class. The Tigers have received a verbal commitment from talented DC-area lefty guard Ben Hazel.

The 6'4"+ 185 lb Hazel is in his senior year at Our Lady of Good Counsel in Olney, MD. Good Counsel is a member of the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference, one of the top basketball leagues in the country and part of the same conference that produced current Princeton freshman Ian Hummer.

Late this afternoon I heard from Good Counsel head coach Blair Mills, who told me all about this important piece of Princeton's class of '14.

New Recruit - Chris Clement.

A second high school senior from Texas in as many weeks has verbally committed to play basketball at Princeton. Joining Highland Park big man Daniel Edwards is 6'0" guard Chris Clement from Round Rock, who told the Tiger coaching staff on Monday that he wanted to be a part of Sydney Johnson's program.

Earlier today I talked on the phone with Stony Point High School boys basketball coach Brian Route. He shared his thoughts with me about his poised point guard.

Congratulations to former Princeton forward Kyle Koncz, who was inducted into the Strongsville (Ohio) High School Hall of Fame.

Ed Persia is the latest Tiger alum to get into coaching. Persia has joined the SMU Mustangs staff.

North Carolina prospect Akil Mitchell has chosen Virginia as his school instead of the Ivy options he was considering.



Tuesday News:

Princeton men's basketball coach Sydney Johnson will serve on an 18 person task force that reviews university/eating club relationships.

A 6'8" high school freshman from Indiana already has a scholarship offer from Northwestern.

The Dagger foresees the Wildcats as the 62nd best team in the country this season.

New Recruit - Daniel Edwards.

On Monday, Princeton picked up a verbal commitment from 6'8" 230 lb big man Daniel Edwards, who hails from Highland Park, TX and attends the same high school that Tiger center Chris Young graduated from a decade ago. Edwards chose Princeton over interest from Penn and Bucknell.

Pending admission, Edwards will join guard T.J. Bray in Princeton's 2010 recruiting class.

Yesterday afternoon I spoke with Edwards' high school coach, David Piehler. He shared his thoughts with me about Edwards, both on-and-off the court.

Georgetown has released its 2009-10 men's basketball schedule.

The John Thompson III Foundation hosts its Third Annual Foundation Weekend on September 18th and 19th.

Two recaps of the talk Bill Bradley and Ken Dryden participated in called Lives on the Run: Sports, Service and Leadership - one in the Cornell Daily Sun and the other in the Ithaca Journal.

A local guard who had Princeton on his short list of suitors has opted to play at Drexel.
