Ian Hummer: ABC 7 Athlete of the Week.

This accolade for Princeton recruit Ian Hummer from late January was only brought to my attention this afternoon.



Wednesday News:

Chris Young and the Padres won their first game of the season, 4-2 over the Dodgers.

Princeton recruit Will Barrett scored 13 points for the Bucks County All-Stars in a second round Donofrio Classic victory over Don-Len.



Tuesday News:

Chris Young takes to the hill for the first time this season as San Diego hosts the Los Angeles Dodgers. First pitch is at 10:00 pm ET.

Princeton recruit Mack Darrow achieved Honorable Mention status on the News-Gazette's 77th All-State Boys' Basketball Team.

Jimmy Sherburne will play for Division 2 South in the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association 2009 All-Star Games.



Monday News:

Princeton recruit Gus Gabel was named Honorable Mention 2008-09 All-Tribune Boys Basketball.

Will Barrett scored four points for the Suburban All-Stars as they bested the City All-Stars by four in the Boys All-Star Labor Classic.

Young made a small adjustment to his delivery on Saturday that has him feeling positive heading into his first regular season start.

Thursday News:

Princeton recruit Jimmy Sherburne (left) was named to the was named the 2009 CNI/NOW All-Suburban Boys Basketball Team.

The College Basketball Invitational's best of three championship will have a winner-take-all game on Friday night, as Oregon State (17-18) was overcome by UTEP in El Paso. The Beavers were within three points in the final minute but the Miners secured the victory at the free throw line.

The Vermont Frost Heaves saw their season end with a 96-90 loss to the Wilmington Sea Dawgs in the wild card round of the Premier Basketball League playoffs.



Saturday News:

Chris Young pitches for the Padres against San Francisco this afternoon in what should be his final Cactus League start before the team heads back to San Diego. Young is 0-2 with a 6.57 era through five spring training games.

Former Princeton recruit Jeff Peterson, who reneged on his Early Decision commitment to the Tigers and then signed with Iowa in April 2007 after reopening his recruitment three months earlier, has announced he will transfer.

Peterson was Iowa's third leading scorer as a sophomore, averaging 10.6 ppg.

It will be interesting to see where Peterson lands, as two of his original finalists had coaching changes during his recruitment (St. Louis, Xavier) and Princeton does not accept transfers.

Thursday News:

"This was probably the gutsiest game and gutsiest group of guys I've been a part of, even counting when I played and certainly since I've coached." - Craig Robinson.

Oregon State (16-17) advanced to the College Basketball Invitational's best-of-three finals with a 65-62 win over Stanford. The Cardinal sent the game to overtime on a second chance turnaround jumper at the buzzer, and were up five with 2:31 left in the extra frame, but Beavers center Roeland Schaftenaar sparked a 7-0 run, hitting a three, scoring inside and then assisting on a backdoor that put OSU up to stay. The Beavers will host the first game of the CBI championship on Monday night.

In the other CBI semi, Richmond (20-16) saw its season end with a 81-69 loss to UTEP. Down all night, the Spiders cut their deficit to two with eight minutes left, but could not get any closer. Richmond head coach Chris Mooney missed the final 4:44 of action, ejected following his second technical foul.

Princeton recruit Will Barrett scored 17 points as Bucks County defeated Filly Sol in the first round of the 2009 Albert C. Donofrio Classic.

Tuesday News:

Oregon State (15-17) advanced to the semifinals of the CBI with a one point overtime victory over Vermont. Calvin Haynes' off-balance bank shot with six seconds to go was the game winner. Stanford will be Oregon State's opponent on Wednesday night in Corvallis, the fourth meeting between the two schools this season.

After the win, Beavers coach Craig Robinson answered questions about his possible interest in two open head coaching jobs and a variety of other subjects.

Kevin Anderson's up and under jumper in the paint with nine seconds left secured a two point Richmond (20-15) win over College of Charleston. Anderson finished with 21, his sixth straight 20 point game. The Spiders will host UTEP in the CBI semifinals on Wednesday.

Princeton recruit Jimmy Sherburne was named Third Team 2009 AP Wisconsin State Boys All-State.

Chris Young gave up three runs in 4 1/3 innings yesterday for San Diego against the Royals.

Will Venable was one of seven players sent to the Padres' minor league camp. It is expected that Venable will start the season in AAA Portland.

Sunday News:

Princeton recruit Ian Hummer became just the third player to repeat as Alhambra Catholic Invitational Tournament Most Valuable Player. Behind Hummer's 15 points and 15 rebounds, Gonzaga won the ACIT title for the second straight year.

Jimmy Sherburne was named to the 10 man WBCA Division 2 all-state team.

Saturday News:

Cornell was able to handle Missouri's pressure defense, but the Big Red had difficulty consistently putting the ball in the basket. 2008 Ivy League Player of the Year Louis Dale finished 1-11 from the field. Ithaca's finest hung with the Tigers for 20 minutes, but Missouri pulled away over the back half of the game.

A double-double for Princeton recruit Ian Hummer as Gonzaga defeated Bishop McNamara, 66-43. The Purple Eagles play St. Frances Academy in tonight's A.C.I.T. championship game at 8:15 pm ET.



Friday News:

Cornell vs. Missouri - 3:00 pm ET - NCAA - CBS

American had a 14 point lead on Villanova early in the second half, before the Wildcats decided to stop trying to match the Eagles jump shot for jump shot and drive. Villanova took the lead back with under 6:30 to go and pulled away at the free throw line for the 80-67 win.

Cornell and Missouri face off in Boise this afternoon.

Ian Hummer scored 15 points as Gonzaga defeated Cathedral, 79-54. The Purple Eagles play Bishop McNamara tonight at 7:30 pm ET.

Hummer is on the roster for the Capitol City Classic, which takes place on April 9th at American University.
