"To Marvin, who understands."

It was a classy display by Princeton head coach Sydney Johnson to have his entire team and coaching staff show up to today's memorial for Marvin Bressler en masse.

Seeing the current Tigers occupying the back two rows of the filled-beyond-capacity auditorium, two things struck me:

1. The similarity in the experiences of those who were assisted by Marvin when they made his acquaintance during his first days at Princeton in the early 1960s to those who graduated in the past few years.

2. A sadness that the current freshmen on the team sitting in Robertson Hall will not have the fortune to get to know Marvin and that they did not share the privilege of his company.

Three inch buttons with Marvin's visage on them or select "Bresslerisms" were handed out at the door.

Today.

Princeton basketball soda.

A limited edition orange cream soda brewed up to celebrate the improbable Ivy title for the 2000-01 Princeton men's basketball team.

The neon color of the beverage makes me confident this drink is as sweet as that season was. I can't bring myself to decant it.

Padres GM Jed Hoyer said the team would not pick up Chris Young's 2011 option, but he would be interested in Young's return to San Diego.

2009-10 Ivy Rookie of the Year Kyle Casey broke a bone in his right foot over the weekend and will miss the next 6-8 weeks. He is expected to return to Harvard's lineup before Ivy play begins.

Monday News:

Mason Rocca (left) scored nine points and grabbed five rebounds off the bench for Armani Jeans Milano, but the host team could not hold off the New York Knicks in yesterday's high scoring exhibition. Rocca was a game-best +15 for his squad in 20 minutes of play. Penn product Ibby Jaaber scored 16 points, swiped seven steals and committed nine turnovers. I have the game on my DVR and hopefully I can watch to write up a few notes shortly.

When Will Venable (video) struck out against Brian Wilson in the top of the ninth yesterday, San Diego's improbable final weekend push to make the NL playoffs came up one win short. Venable played in 131 games in 2010, batting .245 with 13 home runs, 29 stolen bases and 129 strikeouts. After making an adjustment to his back elbow in his swing and raising his average as high as .253, Venable went hitless in his final 12 at-bats.

Chris Young only was able to make four starts for the Padres this season. One in the second game of the year and three down the stretch. Young was 2-0 for the Friars with a 0.90 ERA in 20 innings. It is unlikely San Diego will pick up Young's option year.

Bishop John Barres told stories of Pete Carril at the Mayors' Prayer Breakfast in Reading.

Scott Greenman joins Georgetown staff.

I don't know why it still hasn't been publicly announced by the school (most of you should have been able to figure it out by now), but I've been waiting since early August to tell you that Scott Greenman is currently working on the Georgetown basketball staff as the team's Video Coordinator.

This position was recently held by Martin Bahar, who departed the Hoyas to become Princeton's Director of Basketball Operations in August of last year.

Thursday News:

C. Young (2-0) 5.0 IP 3 H 0 ER 2 BB 6 K 0.90 ERA. 82 pitches, 51 strikes.

Chris Young (video) made what could have been his last start with the Padres a memorable one, throwing five shutout innings as San Diego blanked the Cubs 3-0.

But the story of the game was a pair of amazing catches by center fielder Will Venable. The former Princeton two sport star blocked 23 shots while playing basketball in college but his rejections of a pair of run-scoring plays last night may have been the defensive highlights of his professional baseball career.

In the top of the second inning Venable leapt full extension at the center field fence to rob Alfonso Soriano (video) and one inning later he pulled a sure home run out of the stands (video) while on the run to keep Chicago from tying the game. Not a bad night in the field for a guy who almost didn't play due to his sore back.

Because of Young and Venable the Padres remain in the playoff chase, trying to catch either Atlanta for the Wild Card or San Francisco for the NL West crown.

Northwestern has finally published their 2010-11 men's basketball schedule.

Princeton will welcome a 6'6" prospect to campus next weekend for a visit.

An awkward attempt at a joke made by NRCC chief Pete Sessions behind closed doors has Princeton basketball as an indirect news item on Politico. Don't read the comments, or your eyes will start burning.

Marcus Schroeder in China.

When I talked with recent Princeton graduate Marcus Schroeder in late August about his NBA-DL tryout for the Reno Bighorns, he surprised me when he revealed that he was headed in the morning on a two week basketball barnstorm through China.

Now Schroeder is back stateside. He was nice enough to share some pictures and recollections in his own words from his experience after the jump. - JS

Memories of Marvin?

Princeton Alumni Weekly Photograph Collection

As some of you are already aware, for the past month I have been interviewing individuals about Professor Marvin Bressler, who passed away on July 6th at the age of 87 after a long illness.

Having already taped pieces with 30+ coaches, friends and former players, I hope to eventually speak to every branch of the Princeton basketball tree and record their anecdotes.

I mention this because while there are many boldface names who have stories about Professor Bressler to share, I've reached the point in my work where I'm comfortable making a public appeal for "Marvin Stories."

I think of Marvin as such an incredible storyteller and I never had the chance to record his stories before he passed away so I am trying to paint a detailed picture of the man through other people's personal recollections as well as the tales that he took such pleasure in recounting repeatedly.

If you are reading this and you have any memories from your time with Professor Bressler you would like to share I'd certainly be curious to talk with you. Emails can be sent here.

I also welcome any and all suggestions of people to try and speak with.
