Will Venable was 1-3 with a walk in a 3-2 San Antonio loss to Arkansas on Saturday. Venable went 2-4 on Sunday in a 6-5 Missions victory. His average is back up to .291.
5-23 UC Davis will be switching to the "Princeton offense" this season.
"We really took all the information that we collected from the transition period and made a critical analysis of that information. And then, [we] did that with last season as well and came up with definitive ideas as to how we are going to proceed," said head coach Gary Stewart. "We really feel like we have something that fits our program and gives us the best chance to be successful long-term, something that we can tweak but don't have to blow up and start over. We've got something that we can recruit to, that we can coach to, that we feel more comfortable about."

Chris Young shut down the Pittsburgh Pirates for the third time in as many starts against the team that drafted him and drove in a run with a single to center field as part of a 9-0 Padres victory. Young was replaced at the start of the bottom of eighth inning after the Padres scored five runs in the top of the frame to expand their two run advantage.
"This is the third time since the beginning of last season that we have seen him and we've not been able to do much at all with him," Pittsburgh manager Jim Tracy said. "There is deception with him obviously, and there is something with him that we're not seeing.
Last night Will Venable became the first member of the San Antonio Missions since 2002 to hit for the cycle. Venable laced his first home run of the season in the seventh inning, a three run shot that put the Missions in front 4-3. A double in the top of the ninth completed this rare feat. After seeing his average drop to .262, Venable is 8-14 in his last three games.
"I've been trying to get out of my little funk here and haven't been getting the barrel of the bat on the ball. More than hitting for the cycle, it was great to have a game where I was seeing the ball well and getting some good swings," Venable said. "It's been frustrating. In the last week leading up to this, I've been feeling good. I think I needed one good swing to get me back to where I'm feeling good."
Princeton named Dartmouth assistant Courtney Banghart their new women's basketball coach yesterday. Princeton men's basketball coach Sydney Johnson served on the advisory search committee.

Chris Young retired the first 12 Cubs he faced on Thursday night. Young struck out 10 batters in seven innings of work, but San Diego could only manage one run before Young was lifted for a pinch hitter in the bottom of the seventh as the Padres tried to push a second runner home. Two late runs by Chicago sent the Padres to defeat by a 3-1 score. Young lowered his home ERA this season to 0.66.

Newsom, Earl Named Assistant Men's Basketball Coaches at Princeton

PRINCETON--Tony Newsom and Brian Earl ’99 have been named assistant men’s basketball coaches at Princeton, head coach Sydney Johnson ’97 announced today.
Before joining Johnson’s staff, Newsom spent the past three seasons as an assistant coach on the Princeton staff under head coach Joe Scott.
“I am pleased that Tony has decided to continue working with Princeton basketball,” Johnson says. “His leadership, enthusiasm and basketball knowledge will be an asset to our program moving forward.”
From 2001-04, Newsom was a member of the coaching staff at Holy Cross under Ralph Willard. He was the associate head coach in 2003-04 and an assistant coach the previous two seasons, helping the Crusaders to a pair of Patriot League titles and NCAA berths.
A Metuchen native, Newsom was an assistant coach at Rider from 1997-2001 and at Siena for two seasons prior to that. He played collegiately at Niagara before graduating with a degree in Business Commerce in 1993.
Earl, who played in more winning basketball games (95) than any player in Princeton history, returns as an assistant coach following a professional basketball career in Europe and the United States and a subsequent career in the corporate world with Sallie Mae.
The 1999 Ivy League Player of the Year and the leading three-point shooter in league history, Earl helped the Tigers to three NCAA tournament appearances in his four seasons, including trips to the second round in both 1996 and 1998. The Tigers also advanced to the NIT quarterfinals his senior season.
“As Brian’s teammate at Princeton, I could always tell that he saw the game like a coach,” says Johnson. “I have a great deal of trust and confidence in Brian’s ability to make an outstanding contribution to the future of Princeton basketball.”
In addition to his team-record 281 three-pointers, the Medford Lakes native ranks fifth all-time at Princeton with 1,428 career points. He is also seventh in Princeton history with 263 assists and eighth in program history with 140 steals.
Earl also holds school records for games played (116) and games started (113) in a career. After graduating with a degree in economics, he played professionally in Germany and England as well as in the USBL and EBA in the United States.

Chris Young and the San Diego Padres kick off interleague play at Seattle tonight. 10:05 pm ET first pitch versus the Mariners.
The San Antonio Missions went 2-2 over their last four games. On Monday Will Venable picked up his first triple of the season, going 1-4 with two runs scored in a 8-0 victory over Corpus Christi. Tuesday saw Venable go 1-4 with a double in a 4-3 loss against the Hooks. The next day Venable was again 1-4 with a double, but this time San Antonio came away with a 4-1 win. Finally, last night Venable's eight game hitting streak came to an end in a 6-5 loss that started a series with Frisco.
The Mad Friars web site had the following to say about Venable earlier this week:
Will Venable went 1-for-4 with a double and an RBI, extending his hitting streak to six games after scuffling through a 2-for-32 stretch. Just seven of his 41 hits this year have gone for extra bases but he has collected one in successive days for the first time this year. Six of his seven extra base hits have come at home. Venable also has an RBI in four of his last five games. He is hitting .387 at home this year but just .218 on the road.
Joe Scott has landed his first recruit at Denver, 6'7" forward Rob Lewis from Colorado Springs.
The Pittsburgh Tribune Review is reporting that Georgetown head coach John Thompson III will hire Pittsburgh Director of Basketball Operations David Cox and Xavier assistant coach Kenya Hunter as his new assistant coaches.

New Princeton men's basketball coach Sydney Johnson and princetonbasketball.com editor Jon Solomon met early this morning at Jadwin Gym to talk for the first time about Coach Johnson's first three weeks on the job. Georgetown has issued a press release stating that sophomore forward Octavius Spann intends to tranfer to an as-yet-unnamed school.
San Antonio is going through a bit of a power outage. Last night Will Venable was 0-4 in a 5-2 loss. On Tuesday the Missions dropped a 1-0 duel to Corpus Christi. Venable was 0-1 as a pinch hitter.

Over the weekend, Will Venable and the San Antonio Missions took two out of three. On Friday Venable was 0-3 in a 10-1 loss to Frisco. Saturday saw Venable go 0-3 in a 6-2 victory against Corpus Christi and on Sunday Venable picked up one hit in four attempts as the Missions snared their second game against the Hooks 10-3. Venable's batting average sits at .312 through 30 games.
A surprise for Princeton women's basketball, as head coach Richard Barron stepped down unexpectedly to take an assistant coaching position at Baylor.
