My Bathroom with Rick Majerus - A play in one act
By Jon Solomon

FADE IN

Int. Media Men's Room - thirty minutes after the end of a basketball game.

JON SOLOMON enters the rest room from stage right. ESPN analyst RICK MAJERUS is already in the bathroom at the urinal.

Majerus: My fly is stuck. I'm not trying to flash you.

Solomon (entering stall): I didn't think you were, but thanks for the heads up!

Majerus: Greensboro Airport! Do you think I can make it there in thirty minutes?

Solomon: I'm from New Jersey. I don't know.

Marjerus: New Jersey? You covering Princeton?

Solomon: Yes.

Majerus: Those kids played their asses off tonight.

Solomon: Given that Greenman is hurt and Owings is sick...

Majerus (interrupting): In three years they'll challenge Penn for the Ivy title.

Solomon: Well, they're not as bad as they played against Monmouth but they're not as...

Majerus: Gotta go. See ya!

Rick Majerus quickly exits stage right.

SFX - DOOR SHUTS

Solomon: ...good as they were against... [trails off]

FADE OUT

The end.

It is like Monmouth all over again.

A comely lass watches Wake Forest warm up.

Because the Wake Forest students were on break, preteens in Demon Deacon cheerleading outfits entertained the crowd during time outs.

Should the same school that brought us Rodney Rodgers be allowed to have this much Krispy Kreme sponsorship?

Monmouth 41 Princeton 21.

As a salute to the victorious visitors from the east, allow me to present some famous hawks.

Please do not make me choose which of these above I would most want to listen to for an hour straight on my radio.

Princeton 59 Wyoming 50.

If you had told me during the summer that Princeton would start a lineup of Kevin Steuerer, Patrick Ekeruo, Geoff Kestler, Kyle Koncz and Noah Savage against Wyoming, I'm guessing my immediate response would have been "bird flu?"

Always happy to be pleasantly surprised.

Temple Coach John Chaney on Mardy Collins:

"I know he can't make it to the next level. Everybody's on him wherever he goes. When someone's watching - it's almost like a woman. You start paying attention to her, she starts putting on rouge and lipstick and putting on a corset and all this other stuff, trying to look prettier. That's what happens to players."

For readers less interested in confining their stomachs, a picture of Lee Corso.

Music listened to on the drive up to Hamilton:

Silkworm "Libertine" [El Recordo]
The New Pornographers "Twin Cinema" [Matador]
Eleventh Dream Day "Eighth" [Thrill Jockey]

Colgate's sports complex has a hockey rink on the left end, a basketball gym on the right end and...

A four lane bowling alley in the middle!

(Not to be confused with Go-Gurt.)

There was a scale you could weigh yourself on repeatedly while waiting for Princeton to finally come out of the locker room.

We looked throughout Hamilton after the game ended, but we couldn't find the Tiger-Cats stadium anywhere, so we jumped back in the car and skipped town.

Music listened to on the drive back to Lawrenceville:

Mudhoney "March To Fuzz" [Sub Pop]

The next day we drowned our sorrows with homemade pizza.

Lafayette 57 Princeton 46.

Two days after Thanksgiving the Tigers came out flatter than this delicious pumpkin dark chocolate tart.

(Man, I am really running out of new things to take pictures of at Jadwin.)

Princeton 64 Lehigh 54.

Before the game, a trip to the Crayola Factory.

You could make your own gingerbread puppet.

You could try out different types of chalk on a replica of a city street.

You could get your picture taken with Big Red Crayon.

Coach Carril was featured prominently in the display of famous Lafayette alums.

You would think an Engineer might be able to level this sign properly.

Brown and Lehigh were playing a women's basketball game when we arrived.

Drexel 54 Princeton 41.

The less said about this game the better.

Jadwin Jungle 2005: White is the new orange.

Why the government would allow the NIT to genetically modify a piece of fruit so it is half-apple, half-basketball is beyond me.

Young and the Luckless.

Brian Howard gets the credit for this headline, plus he filled in for me on the radio so I could go cover this game. Thanks, Brian!

Oooooh.

Down below, a man with an acoustic guitar plays one of the worst versions of "Patience" imaginable.

Hard to make out on the Jumbotron, but that is indeed the Phillie Phanatic dressed as a light Jedi Knight vanquishing the Texas Rangers mascot (some sort of giant horse) dressed as a dark Jedi with the help of a kid from the stands (unaffiliated).

A painting of Steve Carlton from the Leroy Neiman school of fine sports art.

Seen in the press box, both wearing Hawaiian shirts: Dallas Green, Harvey Yavner.

Rocca where?

Now, I've never been to Italy (I've been to Luxembourg though, which is another story entirely) but Mike McDonnell and Gabe Lewullis took a vacation to Naples earlier this year to visit their friend and former Tiger battler Mason Rocca. They were kind enough to send the following photos along.

The above, explained:

"Once we arrived at the gym, we entered through the West gate, not knowing this was the Avellino section. Everyone was wearing black or blue trash bags and there was a huge curtain in front of us shielding our view of the court. Neither Gabe nor I had any idea what was going, but I thought, "Welcome to Italy." After realizing you can't get from the West section to the North section of the arena while inside the arena (this is apparently to keep home and visiting team fans, & season ticket holders/families and the guys drinking beer heavily away from each other as emotions run high before & during the games), Gabe and I made our way outside to enter through the North gate, found our seats, and began to chant "Rocca" as loud as we could as the teams warmed up. A few minutes before the opening tip, the large curtain in front of the West section came down, revealing a 30 ft by 25 ft Noah's-Ark-looking structure with pictures of the Avellino players riding on the boat. I wish I were making this up. The blue trash bags were to simulate the ocean as the fans jumped/danced and the black to simulate the night sky."

Offseason?

Former Princeton basketball standout Chris Young pitched at Yankee Stadium on Friday, April 22nd and princetonbasketball.com was there. As a boyhood Yankees fan, it was strange to take the subway to the Bronx and root for the visiting team, but by the end of the night I was used to it.

Because there was no clear policy posted on if you could take photographs while the game was taking place, most of these snapshots are pretty covert.

Things I wish I had been able to take pictures of:

-Bob Shepard's plaid pants.
-The visiting locker room's collection of VHS tapes.
-The secret "media only" concession stand with $1.00 hotdogs and $0.75 pretzels.

The view from the pressbox.

Follow this stripe to the visiting locker room.

While $200,000,000 sounds like a lot for salary, think of all the money the Yankees
have saved the past four seasons by not having to update their signage.
