Media Day 2012.

Delayed a week by Hurricane Sandy, Princeton held its annual preseason Media Day at Jadwin Gym this snowy and blustery afternoon.

Coach Mitch Henderson, Ian Hummer, Will Barrett, Hans Brase and T.J. Bray spoke to princetonbasketball.com about the upcoming season. A number of questions raised earlier today were answered along the way.

In both queries asked and answers given this was one of the better Media Days in some time.

25 Robert Solomon photos have since been added to this post, plus some details on a couple of potential roster additions and observations in addition to the audio which follows after the jump.

If you're interested in inside access like this all season long, please consider becoming a site member.

Will...?

Two years ago I approached Princeton's season opener with a player-by-player wish list. Last year it was simply 19 questions for 2011-12. In lieu of a standard preview, here are a bunch of connected rhetorical queries that all start with the same word.

Feel free to add/answer your own in the comments.

What struck me while putting this together was that the answers may end up being far different but many of these inquests were quite similar to ones posited a season ago.

Wednesday News:

The Daily Princetonian published their season preview today, including a comparison of seniors Ian Hummer and Niveen Rasheed.

There's also an Associated Press league preview out.

A top big man is deciding between Georgetown and North Carolina.

This afternoon is Media Day at Jadwin Gym. If you have any questions for select players or Coach Henderson, either email me or add them in the comments and I'll try my best to ask them on your behalf.

Election Day News:

Ian Hummer is building on a family legacy.

In Italy Dan Mavraides hit double figures for the third straight game as Sidigas Avellino dropped their matchup versus Chebolletta Cantù.

That's the news for today. Go vote, everyone.

Princeton / Harvard reception.

This is the best post-game event every season. Bob Ruxin consistently packs the Harvard gym with several hundred Princeton fans (as evidenced above). If you're going to attend this game, get your tickets from Bob and enjoy an excellent reception afterwards. You'll have the chance to mingle with fellow fans plus the current coaches and players. I'd urge you to act on tickets ASAP as there may not be as many to go around as there have been in past seasons and Harvard's ticket office is SOLD OUT. - JS

Monday News:

A different strain of Simsanity: Running 10,000 Ivy League simulations just wasn't enough for Big Apple Buckets.

Somehow I missed what Jay Billas remarked about Princeton until now.

I'm sure readers will have plenty to say about this excellent essay on Princeton basketball, Joe Scott and "the pressures of family."

Oregon State got their season underway with an exhibition victory over both Lewis & Clark.

Thirteen years of season openers.

Above, the Jadwin Jungle waits for the opening tip of the 2005-06 season.

This post was originally penned in 2009 as "A Decade of Season Openers." I've added last season's home defeat to Wagner as part of an annual revamp for each upcoming season.

Many of these pieces come from the listserv that predated this web site.

With less than week until the 2012-13 season begins, read on for the stories of the past 13 Tiger tipoffs in sequential order...

Sunday News:

Kareem Maddox had 19 points, 10 rebounds and five steals for Newcastle in a victory over Worcester.

I'm trying to find out exactly what happened (Google Translate only gets you so far), but it appears Douglas Davis was cut/released by the Walter Tigers.

A late three pointer gave Fairfield a two point exhibition win over Bridgeport.

Richmond's pressure was too much for Randolph-Macon.

Several Ivy names show up on this comprehensive injury report.

Here's a "Love Letter" to Will Venable.

Chris Young becomes a free agent today.

Friday News:

Mack Darrow and Ian Hummer make this list of the Ivy League's top 10 players.

So many conference previews to get caught up on, including Rush The Court, College Basketball Talk, Sports Network and ESPN.

Basketball Prospectus and Ken Pomeroy both have the Tigers in their preseason Top 100s. ESPN The Magazine's complete rankings don't appear to be available on-line but Princeton is 95th overall.

Henry Caruso gave his word to the Tigers.

Find out who Princeton will host in this weekend's "secret scrimmage."

Joe Scott's childhood home was flooded by Hurricane Sandy. I sincerely hope that everyone reading the site today is fairing OK in the aftermath of the storm.

Dave Blatt has stepped down as head coach of the Russian national team. Could the NBA be next for Blatt?

Chris Mooney purposefully scheduled a road game in a small, hostile gym for Richmond's exhibition this weekend.

Fairfield is still scheduled to host University of Bridgeport in an exhibition tonight.

Northwestern's Bill Carmody previews his team's season.

Georgetown will be both young and mature this year.

Here's a transcript of Oregon State head coach Craig Robinson and senior center Angus Brandt's Q&A at Pac-12 Media Day. The Beavers were picked to finish eighth in their conference.

Dan Mavraides' contract with Sidigas Avellino has been extended for the full 2012-13 campaign. Last weekend Mavraides put up a great stat line as his squad defeated Mason Rocca and Bologna.

A memorial for Bill Sword will be held on Saturday morning at 11:00 am ET at Nassau Presbyterian Church (61 Nassau Street) in Princeton. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Princeton First Aid and Rescue Squad, Centurion Ministries and/or the Princeton Community Foundation.

Throwback Thursday: 1979-80 color photos.

Losing power for three days (happy to report both light and hot water have returned as of this evening), I only just now realized it was Thursday. What better time to share an amazing batch of 18 color photos from the 1979 and 1980 that David Zeft recently unearthed?

Zeft shot these images - which were previously a stack of slides - from the sidelines and stands at Jadwin Gym while attending games with his family.

I have ID'd players to the best of my ability but any further details in the comments would be greatly appreciated.

That's John Rogers (#32) shooting from the top of the key above with Randy Melville (#21) boxing out and Bob Roma (#40) on the wing. You can click on any image to enlarge.

Remembering Bill Sword.

Before you read further, click on this picture. It was taken two seasons ago at the buzzer after Princeton defeated Harvard 54-51. Many of you are in it.

In the stands to your left of Will Barrett and to your right of assistant coach Tony Newsom, clapping with both hands while wearing a light blue shirt, stands Bill Sword '76.

Bill died during Hurricane Sandy on Monday night at the age of 61 when a tree in his yard fell on him.

If you sat behind the bench at Jadwin Gym, you might not have known Bill personally, but you certainly knew his voice.

When I told my wife with disbelief on Tuesday morning "Bill Sword died!" nothing registered.

When I said "the 'YOU'RE MONEY, WILL!' man died!" she joined my shock and sadness.

Bill seemed to arrive habitually late to games in a rush to reach his seat while still well-dressed from work, usually around the first media time out. Once he was seated he immediately made up for lost time.

The sections behind the Princeton team are a faithful yet traditionally quiet bunch with few exceptions.

One of those exceptions was Bill.

His support of specific Tigers (like Will Venable, who I referenced above) and playful derision of certain members of the opposition (he took particular glee in how Princeton shut down Zack Rosen and kept the Quakers from a share of last year's Ivy title) always cut through the air and found my ears.

If they could reach backwards 8-10 rows, I'm sure his words found their intended targets on the court more than a few times.

Jadwin Gym will be a less fun, less-spirited place without Bill Sword.

When he renewed his site subscription just last week, I wrote Bill a note of appreciation for his continued support of what I do. His response was a short one, but included the following:

"highlight of the year is re-upping and getting season tickets!"

I'm so very sorry he won't be able to use those tickets this season. Whomever fills Bill's bleacher seat in future years will be hard-pressed to match his passion and level of caring when it comes to Princeton basketball.

He will be missed.

My condolences to his wife Martha and his three children.

Henry Caruso commits to Princeton.

Word broke last night that 6'5" forward Henry Caruso from Junípero Serra High School in California had verbally committed to Princeton, joining the Tigers' now-five member 2013 recruiting class.

Serra is the same high school Dan Mavraides attended before taking a post-graduate year at Phillips Exeter Academy.

I've reached out to Caruso's high school coach for quotes and observations but given that we've been without power for 60+ hours now at princetonbasketball HQ, it might be a while.

So, enjoy five different videos in the interim of Caruso after the jump.
