Around the Ivy League: Penn (9-8 / 3-0) matched Princeton's perfect conference record, dispatching Dartmouth (5-14 / 1-4) by 31 at the Palestra. Freshman guard Sean McGonagill tied a Pizzitola Sports Center record with 39 points as Brown (8-11 / 1-4) outscored Columbia (12-7 / 3-2) by a 87-79 count. Austin Murphy's three point play with 12 seconds left completed an improbable 71-70 Yale (10-9 / 3-2) comeback over Cornell (4-15 / 0-5). The Bulldogs rallied down 10 with 1:55 remaining.
Postgame audio - Coach Sydney Johnson, Dan Mavraides, Kareem Maddox & Ian Hummer:
"Since I've been here, all I've ever wanted for these guys is to have the type of experience that I had [as a player] and we're getting close." - Princeton head coach Sydney Johnson
Playing in front of a high volume (both definitions) undergraduate throng decked out in orange and black, Princeton took a significant step closer to how things were when Johnson roamed the hardwood instead of the sidelines, defeating Harvard 65-61 in a meeting between two of the Ivy League’s three unbeatens.
Ian Hummer’s two free throws with :04.8 left in the second half gave the Tigers a two possession lead and snuffed the final embers of a Crimson rally.
A frustrated Hummer was forced to sit the last 14:03 of the opening stanza, picking up his second personal foul after connecting with Christian Webster attempting a three pointer on the perimeter. Three free throws sent the Tigers in their first double digit hole since behind 24-13 in November against Bucknell.
Princeton battled from down 11. When Laurent Rivard foolishly fouled Douglas Davis on a running three point try in transition with less than a second before halftime, Davis canned all three tries and the Tigers were within one.
It was the first leg of a 19-2 Princeton push that saw the home team score the initial nine of the second half to take their first lead and open up as large as an 11 point advantage.
Hummer scored 15 of his 17 in the second half, one of three Tigers in double digits. Kareem Maddox was also strong inside, scoring 14 and blocking a career best five shots. Dan Mavraides struggled with his shot, 1-9 inside the arc but 7-8 at the free throw line for 15. Mavraides’ six assists set a career high.
Keith Wright’s 16 points and 11 rebounds paced the Crimson.
On Friday afternoon starting at 5:00 pm ET, before Princeton hosts Harvard, we're busting out a live chat while we're already courtside at Jadwin Gym. Check above to ask questions about the Tigers, the Ivy League and the other teams in the Carril Cradle.
This chat is moderated, so it may take a moment or two for your comments/questions to appear.
For this weekend's Ivy installment of the sensational Know! Your! Foe! series, I exchanged emails for a second time with the knowledgable Michael James from the 14-Game Tournament.
Hello again, sir. It is almost a year to the date since we last exchanged questions. Beyond graduating Jeremy Lin, how has Harvard's team changed since then?
Lin was a huge loss for the Crimson, as were forwards Doug Miller and Pat Magnarelli, who were good Ivy four-men that just struggled to stay healthy.
Speaking of which, let’s start with “healthy.” When Princeton traveled to Boston last year, Magnarelli was on the shelf as were Keith Wright and Andrew Van Nest. Harvard had to try to scratch out 40 minutes with Miller, Kyle Casey and Jeff Georgatos. This year, the Crimson has the latter two and Wright and Van Nest, as well as Ugo Okam if necessary, making the frontcourt an asset, not a liability.
Balance has been the other key difference. During the “Jeremy Lin Show” era, all too often it seemed that everyone was looking to Lin to do something and when he struggled, the team struggled. This year, there are six guys that can carry the offensive load for stretches, which has made this team more consistent from game to game.
Denver vs. UALR - 8:00 pm ET
Washington vs. Oregon State - 9:00 pm ET - FSN Northwest
Chris Mooney won his 100th game at Richmond (17-6), a 62-52 Spider decision against St. Joe's.
Mercer (11-14) came away victorious playing its second Region XIX contest in as many days, 87-77 over Ocean. Mercer's high man was Jonathan Jernigan with 27.
This year's version of "The Gauntlet" starts Friday with the Tigers' home game versus Harvard. A fitting time to repost the following from last season. - JS
After the Brown game, I received the following question from reader Jim W.:
I'd be interested to know the Tigers' record in the second weekend of the five game weeks they play relative to their records in other weeks. I believe that years ago they used to play one or both of the Penn games on a Saturday instead of wedging the games into a Tuesday and wonder if that would make sense again, particularly with all the conference tournaments extending the season.
Excellent inquiry.
How have the Tigers faired in Ivy play running "The Gauntlet" of Friday-Saturday-Tuesday-Friday-Saturday?
Here are 31 years of answers, thanks in part to the good folks at the Princeton Athletic Department...
Tigers head coach Sydney Johnson and princetonbasketball.com editor Jon Solomon met at Jadwin Gym on an icy Wednesday morning to go over Princeton's Ivy-opening sweep of Brown and Yale before previewing the team's next three games at home versus Harvard, Dartmouth and Penn.
This Q&A is 18:00+ in length.
Interviews with Coach Johnson will appear on this site every week during the 2010-11 season.
Scoreless versus Villanova, Chris Wright dropped a game-high, season-high 24 as Georgetown (17-5) fended off #13 Louisville. Hoya Hoops has the postgame audio.
princetonbasketball.com was founded on April 28th, 1998 in an attempt to provide fans of the Princeton Tigers and Ivy League basketball with the best on-line source for up-to-date news and information. We have since expanded to launch a companion site, Georgetown Basketball News.
As these sites have continued to grow we have increased our coverage to include additional teams with Princeton connections - the Richmond Spiders, Denver Pioneers, Oregon State Beavers, Fairfield Stags and Mercer County Community College Vikings - plus former Tigers playing professional baseball and basketball all over the world. This site is not directly affiliated with the Friends of Princeton Basketball, Princeton University or the Princeton athletic department.
