Is Will Venable too slow to play center field in the pros or is he like "a young Jim Edmonds?" Padres' vice president of scouting and development Grady Fuson thinks the answer is the latter. Venable hit his 12th home run of the season in Portland's 4-1 loss to Albuquerque.

Chris Young struck out six of the first seven batters he faced in his return to the Padres rotation, but his performance was overshadowed by Diamondbacks starter Doug Davis' flirtation with a perfect game. Young left with the scoreboard blank and Arizona went on to win 3-0.
Before the game, Young spoke to the North County Times about the 'perks' of being hit in the face with a line drive.

Konrad Wysocki and the German national team qualified for the Olympics in Beijing with a 96-82 victory over Puerto Rico.
Judson Wallace finished his stint at the NBA Summer League in fine form, scoring 15 points, snatching nine rebounds and swiping four steals in Phoenix's 88-69 win over Washington.
The Suns lost a heartbreaker to Portland 74-73 on Saturday, and Wallace had six points and nine boards in 27 minutes of play.
Chris Young threw 73 pitches over five innings in his second rehab start for Single-A Lake Elsnore on Monday night.

In NBA Summer League action, Judson Wallace started at forward for the Phoenix Suns, scoring two points. Wallace made his only field goal attempt in 18 minutes of play, a lefty jump hook in traffic. The Suns blew a late lead and fell 100-97 to Houston.
Will Venable is hitting .393 with runners in scoring position for the Portland Beavers.

Chris Young threw his second simulated game on Friday. Young will make the first of three scheduled rehab starts on Wednesday for the Class A Lake Elsinore Storm.

Will Venable continues to tear it up in Portland, blasting a game-winning three run home run in last night's 4-2 extra inning victory over Fresno. Venable, who has hit safely in 12 straight games, now leads the Beavers in batting average, hitting .322 with 20 doubles through 73 games.

Last night was the NBA draft, and two Georgetown seniors were selected - Roy Hibbert with the 17th pick and Patrick Ewing Jr. (above) in the second round to Sacramento.

Will Venable remains on a roll, batting .411 over his last 10 games, including a 4-4 performance with two doubles on Saturday as Portland bested Tacoma 4-2.
