Chris Young signs with Washington.

On the eve of the start of spring training action, Chris Young signed a minor league deal with the Washington Nationals.

Young was 4-9 in 20 starts with a 4.15 ERA for the New York Mets in 2012, throwing 115 innings. Those 20 starts were the most made by the injury-addled Young since his 2007 All-Star season.

Thursday News:

Find of the week goes to Brian Earl for this scouting report his father gave him of Rutgers' attempts to prepare for Bill Bradley and the rest of the 1964-1965 Princeton Tigers. Of course, Bradley scored 35 points in this game and the orange and black led by 27 at halftime. So much for scouting reports!

The Padres' season concluded last night with a 7-6 win at Milwaukee. For the year Will Venable hit .264 in 148 games (equalling his career high) with 26 doubles, eight triples, nine home runs and 24 stolen bases. His strikeout/game ratio also dropped for the third straight season.

Monday News:

While Dan Mavraides (above, left) made it out of training camp and signed a deal with Sidigas Avellino of Italy's Lega A, his contract is for just one month and his status once teammate Dwight Hardy's passport situation is resolved remains uncertain.

It was likely the last start of the season for Chris Young (4-9) on Saturday and while Young pitched six innings of two run baseball he still took the loss as the Mets were shut out by Atlanta, 2-0. Young concluded 2012 with a 4.15 ERA (3.72 in his last 10 appearances), proving his worth across 115 innings.

Saturday also marked 15 years to the day since Pete Carril was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame.

Please note that today is October 1st, so all 2011-12 accounts have expired. I owe you all a "State of the Site" address, which I fully expected to have posted this morning but due to some unexpected time at the emergency room over the weekend due to my daughter contracting asthmatic bronchitis, it is running late. Look for it shortly, along with several new bells and whistles based on your suggestions. Thanks for understanding. If you wish to renew or subscribe for the 2012-13 season you can do so here.

Monday News:

It looks like paying for parking at Jadwin Gym for basketball games, which was cast off early into last season, is back for the entirety of the 2012-13 slate. The information published by Princeton's Transportation & Parking Services was in error. There's no charge for basketball parking this season, I'm happy to report.

Chris Young made perhaps his final home start at Citi Field yesterday and while Young will likely end his campaign winless in Queens, he again turned in a performance worthy of victory. Young threw six innings of five hit baseball, allowing one earned run while walking two and striking out five. With a walk off single in the bottom of the ninth, the Mets would sweep Miami 3-2.

Northwestern guard JerShon Cobb was suspended from the Wildcats for a year "due to violations of team policy." He will remain enrolled in school.

As you've likely heard by now, Shirley Tilghman will step down as president of Princeton in June.

Before she concludes her term, Tilghman will meet with the Princeton Football Association about issues that could also impact basketball such as transfers, "likely" letters and academic standards for athletes.

Wednesday News:

Georgetown's John Thompson III delivered an encouraging message at Monday's Coaches 4 Character program.

The Daily Princetonian recaps the Tigers' trip to Spain, with quotes from Chris Clement.

In his most recent outing Chris Young (4-8) threw 6.2 innings of solid baseball, but included in his eight hits surrendered were three solo home runs as New York lost 3-0 at Milwaukee. Young, who is looking to stay healthy, received a significant financial bonus for exceeding 100 innings pitched on the season.

A guard from New Jersey has selected Oregon State.

Will Venable drove in three for San Diego in yesterday's victory over St. Louis. The Padres have won 14 of their last 18 games.

The landscape of both the 2012-13 and 2013-14 Ivy League men's basketball seasons have potentially changed significantly with the news that Harvard co-captain and top returning scorer Kyle Casey will withdraw from school for a year after being embroiled in an academic cheating scandal. Fellow co-captain Brandyn Curry has also been implicated but has yet to make a decision on his future.

Labor Day News:

Princeton won their second game in Spain, 66-61 over C.B. Prat. You can see a full box score here. Ian Hummer again led the Tigers, this time with 20 points and seven rebounds. Brendan Connolly added 12 and Will Barrett tallied seven plus a game-best 13 boards.

As he has already done twice so far in games stateside, Mack Darrow's two free throws during the final seconds secured Princeton the victory.

Also of note, 10 points for Chris Clement starting a second straight time at guard and nine for sophomore big Bobby Garbade off the bench.

Princeton won despite shooting 1-9 from three point range and 11-22 on free throws. Turnovers were down considerably from game one against Manresa.

Next on the docket is Tuesday's contest versus LEB Oro squad CB Lucentum Alicante. I believe Darryl Middleton, who at 46 years of age is older than the combined age of any two current Tigers of your choosing, is on this team's roster.

Back home the Mets scored five runs before Chris Young (4-7) had thrown his first pitch versus Florida and the former two sport Princeton standout pitched five innings of five hit, one run baseball as New York won 5-1. Will Venable (video) also slugged his ninth home run of the season.

Finally, a forthcoming book on the Sacramento Kings touches upon Pete Carril and Princeton's 1996 NCAA victory over UCLA.
