Will Venable hit his 10th home run of the season (video), a solo shot to center in the top of the seventh inning, as San Diego came back to beat San Francisco, 4-3.

Lafayette announced their 2009-10 basketball schedule. In addition to a game at Princeton, the Leopards will visit Georgetown on November 28th.

Richmond has released the dates for their Atlantic 10 slate, completing their schedule for the upcoming season.

A 6'2" guard from western Pennsylvania who "also drew interest from Princeton" committed to Cornell.

One name to add and one name to remove from your recruiting radar - A 6'7" North Carolina forward says Princeton is one of the schools that have made him an offer, while a 6'9" post player from Arizona who had previously listed the Tigers among his suitors verbally committed to Weber State.

Finally, there was a post on TigerBlog on Monday called "Jon Solomon, Media Member?" that I'd be curious to hear your opinions on. While, as I said in that site's comments, I'm not sure how comfortable I am with my name being the focal point for this discussion - I think both this post and the Washington Post article I shared here that inspired it raise some interesting, important issues. I had only hoped that by this point I would have earned a period in the subject line, not a question mark.



Friday News:

Senior Nick Lake tells the Princeton Athletic Department about the mission he took to Peru this summer.

A 6'8" center from Illinois recently returned from an east coast trip where he visited Princeton, Penn, Yale, Brown, Cornell and Army.

Georgetown coach John Thompson III and his wife Monica will speak at a charity auction supporting breast cancer awareness following the Washington Mystics' game on Sunday.

Former Hoya Jessie Sapp has signed a contract to play overseas for the Scottish Rocks.

The last two articles today have no direct connection to the programs this site covers, but are interesting discussion points:

St. John's has hired someone well-versed in social networking to use Twitter and provide "enhanced coverage" from courtside during Red Storm games this season. If this is done right, with use of TwitPics, Retweets about the team from varied sources and two way Q&As, it will be a great way to connect with this program.

The Washington Post has an article about the blurring line between fan and reporter as more and more individuals start up school-specific recruiting web sites.



Monday News:

Will Venable was at the center of a bench-clearing incident during yesterday's game between the Padres and the St. Louis Cardinals. Venable grounded out to first baseman Albert Pujols and Pujols felt Venable gave him an elbow when Pujols tagged him out in the baseline. After the game, Venable considered the matter over. Pujols, not so much.

Gonzaga's Cedrick Lindsay has accepted an offer to play at Richmond. Lindsay's teammate Malcolm Lemmons is considering an offer from Princeton, among other Ivy schools.

Former Northwestern guard Craig Moore is blogging about his first year playing overseas for the Dutch team De Friesland Aris.



Monday News:

Scott Greenman (pictured third from the left with the rest of the USA coaching staff) talks to the Town Topics about his experiences coaching in Israel.

According to Paul Westphal, Pete Carril will be focusing on improving the Sacramento Kings' shooting.

Will Venable was picked off first base with the bases loaded in the top of the seventh inning on Saturday, ending the Padres' hopes of rallying past St. Louis.

A piece in the Providence Journal on the recruitment of Harvard commitment Matt Brown mentions that part of Tommy Amaker's recruiting pitch is "he’s trying to make Harvard basketball what Princeton basketball used to be."



Saturday News:

Chris Young will have an arthroscopic debridement procedure on his right shoulder on Monday. He will not pitch again in 2009.

Will Venable drove in two runs for the Padres on Wednesday. Here's video of his RBI single to right that opened the scoring. Venable picked up two more base hits last night in San Diego's 9-2 loss at St. Louis.

Northwestern forward John Shurna talks about his time with the USA U-19 team, who won the gold medal at the Under-19 World Championships in New Zealand.

Sports Illustrated has a piece about three different top 100 prospects who are showing a strong interest in playing basketball at Harvard.



New Recruit - T.J. Bray.

Princeton's first publicly-revealed member of the 2010 recruiting class is 6'4", 185 lb combo guard T.J. Bray from Catholic Memorial School in Waukesha, Wisconsin. According to the Wisconsin Sports Network, Bray chose Princeton over offers from Brown, Bucknell, Dartmouth, Florida Gulf Coast, Hillsdale, Lehigh and North Dakota.

I had the chance to speak with Bray's AAU coach, Ritchie Davis of Wisconsin Playground Warriors and Bray's high school coach Dean Bellanti. Both shared their thoughts with me about the newest Tiger.

Wednesday News:

The relationship between Will Venable and his parents is the focus of an article on padres.com.

Venable's recent surge also earned him a profile in the San Diego Union Tribune.

Last night Venable hit a long home run to right field (video) as San Diego pasted Milwaukee 13-6. Venable added a two run single in the Padres' six run sixth inning.

It isn't all baseball news around these parts though. Word has broken on Princeton's first 2010 commitment. I spoke with his AAU coach last night for a profile that I hope to publish today. Just need to get a few quotes from his high school coach and you'll learn all about the first publicly-announced name of next year's freshman class.



Tuesday News:

Will Venable went 0-4 at the plate for San Diego last night in Cincinnati, lowering his batting average to .209.

Chris Young played catch yesterday without soreness, but his recovery from a shoulder inflammation is taking longer than planned.

ESPNChicago.com has a feature up on Oregon State coach Craig Robinson.

Robinson may be on the verge of signing a prized recruit, according to wildaboutazcats.com.

Some of the Princeton coaching staff was out recruiting at the Hoop City Classic in Kansas.



Friday News:

Georgetown will play Washington in the Wooden Classic on December 12th.

6'6" forward Stepehen Stepka will join the Hoyas as a walk on this fall.

The Oregon State schedule has been released.

An article in the Reading Eagle about John Barres has both anecdotes about Pete Carril and an excellent locker room photograph.

Richmond is focusing on strength and conditioning during the off-season.

Brown has also released their 2009-10 schedule.



Wednesday News:

Scott Greenman and the USA Juniors team came up two points short of the gold medal at the Maccabiah Games, falling to Israel 79-77.

Georgetown will host Temple in an early-season game broadcast by ESPN.

The Richmond non-conference schedule now includes a meeting with Florida.

A 6'3" combo guard from Tennessee says Princeton is one of the schools recruiting him.
